Gravel & Granite Driveway

The project

An old concrete drive in Leopardstown dug out and rebuilt as a gravel drive edged in granite, with a cobble apron at the gate and granite steps.

The old concrete drive came out and the ground was dug down to a firm base, then the frontage was rebuilt around granite: a cobble apron inside the gate, granite edging to hold the gravel and the bed on the garden side, and granite steps at the front door. James's own line for the job was a gravel and granite driveway in Leopardstown, and that is what it is. See more of our gravel driveways across South Dublin.

A gravel drive lives or dies on its edges and its base. Here the edging is granite, the apron at the gate is granite cobble, and the gravel sits on a compacted base, so the surface stays flat and the stone stays in. Rain goes through it instead of running to the road, and a rake brings it back level.

It is the same build as our Churchtown gravel driveway and the Terenure gravel driveway: the edging and the apron first, the base compacted, the gravel last.

The price turns on the size of the frontage, how much old surface has to come out, the edging and apron you choose and the steps or beds that go with it. The cost factors for a gravel driveway are laid out plainly, and the figure for your house comes from a visit and a free written quotation, with our 10-year written guarantee. Before & after

The transformation.

The old concrete drive had cracked and lost its surface, and the dig-out was marked straight onto it. Drag the slider to see the change.

The process

How we did it.

01

Broken out and dug down

The old concrete was broken out and carted away and the ground dug down to a firm base, so the new drive sits on something solid rather than on the old slab.

Edging, apron and gravel

The granite edging and the cobble apron were set first to fix the lines and the levels, then the gravel was spread between them and raked tight to a level finish.
