Gravel driveway cost in Ireland is set by the dig-out, the base, the edging and the drainage, not by the stone you see on top. Gravel is the lowest-cost of the finishes we lay across South Dublin, and the only real figure is a written quotation after a free site visit. See our gravel driveways page for the finishes and edging we lay.

- No fixed price per metre: the dig-out, the base, the edge and the drainage set the figure

Where the money goes on a gravel driveway
The gravel is the smallest line on the quote. Most of the cost sits in what happens before the stone arrives: breaking out the old surface and carting it away, digging down to firm ground, laying and compacting a stone sub-base, rolling out a weed membrane, and setting an edge on concrete to hold it all in.
A drive that only needs the old surface lifted and a base compacted sits at the low end. One where the ground is soft, the levels are wrong or an old base has to come out as well takes more machine time and more cartage, and the price follows.

The edge costs more than the stone, and matters more
Loose stone only stays put if something holds it. On every gravel driveway we lay, the edge goes in on concrete before any stone goes down: a granite cobble border, a kerb, or a brick or paving edge to match the house. After the groundwork, that edge is the dearest part of the job, and it decides whether the stone is still in its bed in a few years or spread across the footpath.
The entrance is where this shows. Cars turn and brake on the same patch every day, so a cobble apron at the gate takes the wear and keeps the gravel off the path. On the Churchtown gravel driveway the granite cobble apron and border were set on concrete to frame the drive, and the brick entrance piers were rebuilt and capped at the same time. The gravel itself was the last and cheapest layer of that job.

Size first: a larger area means more dig-out, more cartage and more base. The ground comes next: firm ground that holds a compacted base is straightforward, soft or wet ground is not. Access matters too, because a tight entrance means material is barrowed in by hand rather than tipped from the truck.
Then the extras that are really small jobs of their own: a drainage channel at the door, a step or a path in granite or porcelain, walls or piers rebuilt, a bed cut into the drive for planting. On the Terenure gravel driveway the cobble apron and the border were the extras, and the stone was the easy part. The grade of gravel moves the figure a little, decorative stone against self-binding, but far less than the ground does.

Why a cheap gravel quote costs more later
A low price for gravel usually means a layer was skipped. Stone tipped straight onto soil, or onto an old surface with no membrane and no edge, looks fine on the day. Within a season it sinks where the cars sit, weeds come through from below and the stone works its way out to the road. The fix is to dig it all out and start again, which costs more than doing it properly the first time.
When you compare quotes, compare the layers: how deep the dig-out is, what the sub-base is, whether there is a membrane, and what the edge is set on. One customer put it in a review of our work: “The quality of the construction is excellent, layer by layer.” Our complete guide to gravel driveways goes through each layer in turn.
How much does a gravel driveway cost in Ireland?
There is no single price, because the figure depends on the size of the drive, the ground under it, how much is dug out and carted away, the edging, and any drainage, steps or walls. The only accurate figure is a written quotation after a site visit, which we give free across South Dublin.
Is a gravel driveway cheaper than tarmac or block paving?
Usually, yes. Gravel is the lowest-cost of the three common finishes, with tarmac next and block paving the dearest, because the stone is bedded rather than laid by hand. The groundwork is much the same under all three. Our guide to tarmac, gravel or paving compares them.
What adds to the cost of a gravel driveway?
Soft ground, poor access, walls or piers to rebuild, a step or a path, and drainage where water pools. Each is a small job in its own right. A plain rectangle on firm ground with a sound edge is the simplest and lowest-cost version.
