Asphalt and tarmac are the same kind of driveway to most people in South Dublin, and on a home driveway that is fair: both are crushed stone bound with bitumen, laid hot by machine and rolled to a dense, sealed finish. We lay both. What separates a driveway that stays level from one that cracks and sinks is not the word on the quote but what is under the surface. Every driveway we lay starts with a full dig-out, the spoil carted away, and a compacted stone base set to falls so water runs to a drain and not to the house. The Ballinteer tarmac driveway on our projects page is a typical job: a worn surface between brick piers taken out, a new base compacted in, granite edging set on concrete, then the tarmac laid to falls.

The surfacing goes down by machine in a single hot pass and is rolled while it is still warm, which is what gives the tight, even finish you cannot get by hand. Edges are set in granite, cobble or brick on a concrete haunch, so the surface is locked in and does not crumble at the sides. The tarmac and granite driveway in Foxrock shows the full version of that: entrance walls rebuilt, a granite cobble apron and edging set first, then the black surface laid to falls with a channel drain keeping water on the move.
