Gravel Driveway & Limestone Cobbles

The project

A new gravel driveway in Foxrock in place of old block paving, with Egyptian limestone cobbles at the entrance and porcelain paving at the house.

A new gravel driveway in Foxrock, with Egyptian limestone cobbles and porcelain paving. The old block paving came up and the frontage of this bungalow was rebuilt as a gravel drive: an Egyptian limestone cobble apron at the entrance, the same cobbles as an edge curving round the planted bed, and large-format porcelain along the front of the house where people walk and the pots sit. See more of our gravel driveways and porcelain paving across South Dublin.

Gravel over a proper base has nothing to crack or lift, rain goes straight through it, and a rake brings it back level in minutes. The limestone cobbles hold the stone where the cars turn in and where the bed meets the drive, and the porcelain gives a clean, flat surface at the door that does not carry gravel indoors.

It is the same pairing as our gravel drive with a porcelain path in Rathfarnham, and the limestone is the stone of our Egyptian limestone patio in Clonskeagh.

The price turns on how much old surface comes out, the size of the frontage, the cobble work and how much porcelain goes down. We measure on a visit and put a free written quotation in your hand, with our 10-year written guarantee on the work. If you are in Foxrock or nearby, ask us to call out or send a photo on WhatsApp.

Before & after

The transformation.

The old block paving had done its time: joints open, the colour gone patchy. Drag the slider to see the change.

The process

How we did it.

01

Block paving up, porcelain and cobbles first

The old block paving was lifted and carted away. The porcelain along the house went down first, set to a straight line, then the limestone cobble apron and the edge round the bed, so every line was fixed before any gravel arrived.

02

Grid down, gravel in

A grid went down across the drive to hold the gravel in place and keep the surface flat under the cars, then the gravel was spread over it and raked level to the cobble edges.

Mid-work: the gravel grid laid across the drive, a worker kneeling at the apron
Mid-work: gravel being spread over the grid, the bed edged in cobbles
The result
