1. The Area And Its Shape
The bigger the driveway, the more dig-out, stone, sand and block it takes, so area comes first. Shape comes close behind. A square frontage between two straight walls is quick to lay, because most blocks go down whole. A sweep around a planted bed or a step in the boundary means cutting blocks along every line, and cutting takes time, which is why a curved silver border costs more than a straight run of the same length.
2. How Much Has To Come Out
Cobblelock laid over an old surface rarely stays level, so what is there normally comes up first. Old concrete takes longer to break out than loose gravel, and every load has to leave the site. The cost follows the amount of spoil and how easily a machine can reach the front of the house. A narrow entrance or a wall in the way can mean a smaller machine and more trips.
3. The Base Under The Blocks
This is the line on a quote that matters most, and the first one a low price thins out. A stone sub-base is compacted in layers and set to falls, so rain runs to a drain or a gully and not towards the house. Soft ground means going deeper. All of that is covered over within days, and it decides whether cobblelock driveways stay level or sink in the wheel tracks.

The block moves the price twice: what it costs to buy and how long it takes to lay. One colour in a plain bond goes down fastest. Mixed tones, a contrasting border band or a shaped apron at the gate each add cutting and setting out. We bring block samples to the site visit, so you can hold them against the house and hear what each option adds before you choose.
5. Edges, Levels And Drainage
A cobblelock driveway is only as tight as its edge. We set each edge course on a concrete haunch so the blocks cannot creep, and that work runs the full length of the boundary, so a long or winding edge costs more than a short straight one. A drive that falls towards the front door needs a channel drain or a gully to carry the water off, and a steep one may need a step or a low wall.

For the same area, usually yes, because blocks are set out and laid one at a time where tarmac goes down by machine. In return you get more choice of colour and pattern, and a section can be lifted and relaid later. If you are still choosing, weigh up tarmac, gravel or paving for your house.
Can You Keep The Old Base To Save Money?
Sometimes. If the existing base is sound and the levels suit, less has to come out and the cost falls. More often a base laid for something else is at the wrong depth or the wrong falls, and we will tell you straight at the site visit which it is.
